HDFC Bank is embedding artificial intelligence into the heart of its banking operations, using the technology to improve customer service, strengthen credit decision making and automate trade processing as it prepares for what it calls the “AI first era.”
In its FY26 Annual Report, the country’s largest private sector lender said AI is no longer being treated as a standalone technology initiative but has become an integral part of the bank’s systems, workflows and decision making processes.
“Technology is increasingly at the centre of how we build and operate the Bank. During the past year, we have embedded intelligence directly into systems, workflows and decision making, instead of treating it as a stand alone capability,” Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sashidhar Jagdishan said in the annual report.
A major pillar of the bank’s AI strategy is Neev, its in house foundational platform that provides a common architecture for developing and deploying AI applications across the organisation. According to the bank, the platform enables standardisation, reuse of AI models and alignment with enterprise governance while accelerating adoption across business functions.
AI is already delivering measurable benefits across several business verticals. HDFC Bank said AI powered solutions are helping frontline employees provide faster and more consistent responses to customer queries, improving service quality and reducing response time.
The technology is also being deployed in the retail lending business, where AI models are supporting credit assessment and improving employee productivity. In trade finance operations, AI assisted classification is enabling faster and more accurate processing of trade transactions at scale, helping streamline back office operations.
“This has helped us strengthen our AI capabilities and embed them more deeply across the organisation,” Jagdishan said while referring to the Neev platform.
Beyond AI, the bank continues to modernise its technology infrastructure. It has rolled out in house engineered Net Banking and Mobile Banking platforms, enhanced its payments ecosystem, strengthened cloud and core banking infrastructure, and expanded its technology talent base through a new Tech and Digital Centre in Guwahati.
Looking ahead, HDFC Bank believes AI will remain central to its long term strategy.
“More importantly, we are building a bank that is faster, more resilient and better equipped to serve customers at scale. With conviction, responsible innovation and a unified approach, we are well positioned to capitalise on the AI first era,” Jagdishan said.
