Roblox is turning AI into a game-making engine; here’s how

Roblox AI Game Creation

Roblox is taking its AI ambitions beyond helping people play games. Roblox is now using artificial intelligence to make it easier for almost anyone to build one. At its annual Roblox Developers Conference, Roblox said it is building an AI creation layer on top of its gaming platform, describing the technology as a system designed specifically for the complexity of game development. The goal is not simply to add an AI chatbot to Roblox, but to change who can actually create games.

The clearest example is Build, Roblox’s AI-powered game creation tool. Introduced earlier this year, Build allows users to create a game by describing what they want through prompts. Instead of beginning with traditional game-development tools, a creator can start with an idea and use AI to generate a playable starting point.

The early results suggest that the approach is attracting people who previously would not have considered themselves game developers.

According to Roblox, creators have already used Build to publish approximately 9,000 games. More significantly, 71% of the thousands of users who created a game with Build had never used Roblox Studio before.

That number may be more important than the number of games itself. It suggests AI is not merely helping experienced developers work faster. It is bringing a completely new group of people into game creation.

Roblox is now expanding Build beyond its initial launch market and adding features including desktop access, an asset library and greater control over how games are developed and modified. The company is also working toward connecting Build with Roblox Studio, allowing creators to move between quick AI-assisted creation and more advanced development.

The next major step is Scene Generator, which Roblox says will arrive later this year. Creators will be able to provide a text prompt and a reference image, with AI generating a functional game layout. That creation can then be refined inside Roblox Studio.

Roblox is also working on AI-powered non-player characters that can playtest games. That could allow creators to identify problems and experiment with gameplay before real players encounter them.

The broader ambition is significant. Roblox says it has effectively built a cloud operating system for gaming, combining its engine, infrastructure and services so creators can publish and scale games globally. Now it wants AI to become a new layer on top of that system.

The timing is notable. Roblox says players spent 29 billion hours on the platform during the last quarter across more than 180 countries. At the same time, the company is preparing to let creators distribute Roblox-powered games as standalone apps across mobile, PC and consoles, while players will soon be able to launch games directly through Chrome without installing the Roblox app.

Together, these moves point to a larger shift: Roblox is no longer just trying to make games easier to play. It is trying to make games easier to create.

And if AI can turn an idea written in a prompt into a functioning game, the definition of who qualifies as a game developer could change dramatically.
