The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence, automation and digital operating models is putting pressure on workforce systems across India’s BFSI sector, according to a new industry report by Great Place To Work.
The report titled People Reality in BFSI-The 3 Workforce Imperatives warns that while banks, financial services firms and insurers are aggressively pursuing digital transformation, their people systems are struggling to keep pace with the scale and speed of change.
According to the findings, 83% of organisations are prioritising digital transformation, but only 31% believe their workforce is prepared for the shift. The report highlights a growing disconnect between technology adoption and workforce readiness, especially as AI reshapes job roles, workflows and leadership expectations.
It notes that AI, automation and digital processes are fundamentally redesigning how work is performed across BFSI organizations. Traditional job structures are being replaced by evolving skill-based roles, increasing dependence on a limited pool of highly capable employees. This concentration of expertise is contributing to burnout, attrition and declining collaboration in high-performance teams.
In BFSI, competitive advantage is no longer defined by access to talent alone. It is increasingly determined by how quickly organisations can help their people learn, unlearn and reapply skills as roles evolve, the report highlighted, adding in a sector with rapid changes happening simultaneously, learning velocity has become a critical indicator of organisational resilience. The challenge is not awareness.
Most BFSI organisations recognise that reskilling is inevitable, with more than half the workforce expected to require new skills in the coming years.
The report identifies three major workforce imperatives for the BFSI sector in the AI era. These include enabling leaders and culture to drive sustainable business performance, moving from digital intent to AI-powered agility and harnessing learning velocity as a competitive advantage.
