These four structural catalysts are powering India’s data centre boom

India's rapidly growing digital economy, cloud adoption and AI revolution are creating unprecedented demand for new data centre capacity.

India’s data centre industry is entering a phase of rapid expansion, driven by a combination of rising digital consumption, cloud adoption, artificial intelligence and supportive government policies. As enterprises, consumers and AI applications generate unprecedented volumes of data, the need for local processing and storage infrastructure is growing rapidly. Four long term structural catalysts are expected to underpin the next wave of investments in India’s data centre ecosystem.

According to ICICI Securities, the country’s data centre sector is being propelled by four key structural catalysts that are accelerating capacity expansion across the country.

The data dominance mismatch: India generates 20% of the world’s data traffic fuelled by surging mobile consumption, rising uplink traffic, and unprecedented fixed broadband penetration yet holds only 2% of global data centre capacity. This severe imbalance necessitates localised hosting infrastructure. Furthermore, integrating AI into mobile applications shifts heavy processing from consumer handsets directly to data centres.

Accelerated cloud adoption: The broader Indian cloud computing market spanning public, private, and hybrid environments is experiencing exponential growth across all core segments.

The AI catalyst: Traditional cloud workloads require a modest 4 10kW per rack. In stark contrast, AI optimised nodes packing dense GPU clusters demand substantial power densities ranging from 30 100kW per rack.

Global hub ambitions: Favourable government policies coupled with ample resources position India as a competitive global data hub, offering significant room for scaling without the immediate resource constraints faced by regional peer countries.
